Nutritional Tips
An ‘Izakaya (居酒屋)’ is a Japanese-style pub where people go to have drinks and meals. The meals are generally served in smaller portions. People eat a little, drink, and then “rest their chopsticks.” Because of this, it is very different from a typical pub or restaurant. It is like a Western bar, but with food. Some may call it a Japanese pub, but it’s not just about serving “sake.”
The point is that people eat little by little and focus on talking, which is a style similar to Spanish tapas. Instead of eating one large portion of a dish, people order various foods and share them with others. Therefore, people tend to eat a variety of dishes.
However, it is important to eat balanced meals instead of ordering only greasy, oily fried food to stay healthy. Recently, people have become more concerned about their health, so there are a lot of healthier options such as tofu salad, seaweed salad, sashimi, steamed edamame beans, kimchi, grilled chicken skewers, or steamed chicken breast, etc. Of course, there are plenty of traditional dishes as well, including karaage (fried chicken), tempura, croquettes, or French fries…
